Bird flu detected in seagulls in Aveiro and Faro

Bird flu has been detected in seagulls in the districts of Aveiro and Faro, but Portugal remains free of this disease in poultry, according to the Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary Affairs (DGAV).
“Since the end of July, several cases of infection by highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses have been detected in wild birds, namely seagulls collected in the following locations: Deserta Island, Faro municipality, Olhos de Água, Albufeira municipality and Gafanha da Nazaré, Ílhavo municipality”, reads a note from DGAV.
However, Portugal remains free of bird flu in poultry.
The DGAV has asked bird keepers to comply with biosecurity measures and good production practices, avoiding contact between domestic and wild birds.
